Gas chromatography (GC) is a technique for the analysis of thermally stable volatile compounds.
The TSG chromatography department is equipped with 3 GC systems:-
‘Standard’ GC
It consists of a standard workhorse GC. A capillary system fitted with flame ionisation detection (FID) it is capable of analysing up to 100 samples in a batch process. It is also fitted with an electron capture detector (ECD) for very sensitive analysis of halogenated compounds.
Headspace GC
A headspace analyser is attached to a GC to facilitate the sensitive direct analysis of samples without recourse to solvent extraction.
GC with Mass Selective (MS) detection
A GC is fitted with an MS detector for the unambiguous identification of volatile compounds by comparison with a vast on-line library or through first principles elucidation. The headspace attachment can be interfaced with the GC/MS for the identification of volatiles directly from a matrix.
